Spectrophotometric studies on the catalytic hydration of 2-pyridine-carbonitrile derivatives in the presence of the title catalysts under nearly neutral conditions revealed that the products are the amides. The hydration of the nitrile group was influenced by electronic and steric effects. Selective hydration of the nitrile group in the α-position was observed with dinitriles. The selectivity was applied to hydrolysis of nitriles to carboxylic acids.
