Lithiation of 3-alkoxypyridines occurred in the 2-position. The best yields were obtained by treating 3-ethoxypyridine with BuLi in THF in the presence of an equimolar amount of Me2NCH2CH2NMe2. Substitution reactions of the lithiated alkoxypyridines gave I (R = Et, CH2Ph, R1 = SiMe3; R = Et, Me, R1 = CHMeOH; R = Et, Bu, R1 = D; R = Et, R1 = AsMe2, CEt2OH, CH(OH)C6H4OMe-4, CHO).
