A selective, economical, and ecological protocol has been described for the oxidation of methyl arenes and their analogs to the corresponding carbonyl compounds and epoxidation reactions of alkenes with molecular oxygen (O-2) or air as a green oxygen source, under mild reaction conditions. The nano Ni/g-C3N4 exhibited high photocatalytic activity, stability, and selectivity in the C-H activation of methyl arenes, methylene arenes, and epoxidation of various alkenes under visible- light irradiation without the use of an oxidizing agent and under base free conditions. Asymmetric reduction studies of heteroaryl ketones, including phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methanone in enantioselective form with biocatalysts are very few, and chiral heteroaryl alcohols have been synthesized generally in the small scale. In this study, seven bacterial strains have been used to produce the (S)-phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methanol in high enantiomeric excess and yield. Among the tested strains, Lactobacillus paracasei BD101, was found to be the best biocatalyst for the reducing phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methanone to the (S)-phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methanol at gram scale. The asymmetric bioreduction conditions were systematically optimized using L. paracasei BD101, which demonstrated excellent enantioselectivity and high level of conversion for the bioreduction reaction. (S)-phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methanol, which is an analgesic, was produced enantiomerically pure form in the first time on gram scale using a biocatalyst. In total, 5.857 g of (S)-phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methanol in enantiomerically pure form (>99% enantiomeric excess) was obtained in 52 h with 93% yield using whole cells of L. paracasei BD101. Enantiomerically pure (S)-phenyl (pyridin-2-yl)methanol, which is an analgesic, was first produced in the gram scale using a biocatalyst with excellent ee (>99%) and yield (93%). [GRAPHICS] .

Two diastereoisomers of bis(2-benzoylpyridine-O,N)dichloridonickel(II) have been isolated from the reactions of nickel(II) chloride hexahydrate and the organic ligand depending on the reaction solvent (ethanol, acetonitrile) used. DFT studies indicate that one of the isomers is more stable in both solvents, but nevertheless different diastereoisomers are crystallized from the two solvents. The two complexes represent the first pair of well characterized diastereoisomers in the coordination chemistry of 2-pyridyl ketones, providing a new example in the chemistry of octahedral MA(2)(BC) over cap (2) complexes (A = a monodentate ligand, (BC) over cap = an unsymmetrical bidentate chelate).

P-glycoprotein (P-gp)-mediated multidrug resistance (MDR) is a major obstacle to successful chemotherapy for leukemia. In this study, a series of thiosemicarbazone-containing compounds (4a-b, 7a-q) were synthesized. Biological evaluation showed that the most active compound 7e displayed potent anti-leukemia activity against P-gp overexpressing drug-resistant K562/A02 cells, with an IC50 value of 0.44 mu M. Notably, compound 7e exhibited a selective killing effect on K562/A02 cells by dose-dependently increasing the intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), thus exerting a potential collateral sensitivity (CS)-promoting effect in vitro. Moreover, compound 7e could inhibit HDAC1 and HDAC6, and induce the apoptosis of K562/A02 cells by increasing the expression of Bax, decreasing Bcl-2 protein level, and promoting the cleavage of caspase-3 and PARP, respectively. Overall, 7e may be a potential anti-cancer agent against drug-resistant myelogenous leukemia.

A novel NNO pincer type ligand (E)-N’-(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)isonicotinohydrazide, PPMINH, was synthesized by condensation of 2-benzoyl pyridine and isonicotinylhydrazide. The ligand PPMINH on reaction with metal ions Fe(III), Co(II) and Ni(II) yielded six metal derivatives. Different analysis tools like; Elemental analyses, ESI-MS, FT-IR, molar conductivity, UV-spectra, magnetic susceptibility, NMR and EPR measurement were used. Theoretical FT-IR, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR of ligand and complex 6 exhibits quite a good correlation coefficient. EPR spectrum of complex 6 at LNT suggests octahedral geometry around Ni(II). The ligand and complexes were screened for antibacterial activity. DFT has been carried out to optimize the geometry of the ligand and complexes. The properties most relevant to their potential action as corrosion inhibitors has been calculated all parameters of DFT from the inhibitor molecule to the metal atom. A series of two new mono- and one binuclear m-nitrato bridged copper(II) complexes [Cu(L)(HL)]ClO4 (1), [Cu(HL)(NO3)(H2O)](2)NO3 center dot H2O (2) and [Cu-2(L-2)(mu-NO3)(2)] (3), with an unsymmetrical NNO donor Schiff base (HL) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, CV, UV-vis and EPR spectroscopy. Their molecular structures were also determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography. In the binuclear complex 3, the Cu center dot center dot center dot Cu distance is 3.494 angstrom. In 1, 2 and 3, the Cu(II) centers have distorted square pyramidal geometry (tau(5) = 0.05-0.17). Evidence of weak pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking intermolecular interactions along with other non-covalent interactions (hydrogen bonding) was observed by analyzing the respective crystal structures of the complexes. Thus, these hydrogen bonds, pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking interactions and other weak intermolecular interactions establish in the form of supramolecular architectures a crystalline network environment. The non-covalent interactions were also investigated by employing Hirshfeld Analysis. The room temperature magnetic moments of the mononuclear complexes are less than the spin only values which are indicative of small interactions. Also, significant magnetic interactions were not exhibited by binuclear copper(II) complex 3 in the variable temperature magnetic measurements. The X-band EPR spectra of all three complexes exhibit copper(II) hyperfine structures as well as zero-field splitting which are appropriate for the triplet states of dimers. In complexes 1 and 2, the presence of pseudo dipolar interactions is proposed. Quantum chemical calculations (DFT) were carried out on complexes 1-3 to explore the electronic and spectral properties of these newly synthesized complexes. These complexes show significant antiproliferative and SOD activity. The SOD activity measured in terms of kMcCF is in the range 4.94-12.31 (mol L)(-1)s(-1))x 10(4). (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
