We develop the chemistry of boron difluoride hydrazone dyes (BODIHYs) bearing two aryl substituents and explore their properties. The low-energy absorption bands (lambda(max)=427-464 nm) of these dyes depend on the nature of the N-aryl groups appended to the BODIHY framework. Electron-donating and extended pi-conjugated groups cause a redshift, whereas electron-withdrawing groups result in a blueshift. The title compounds were weakly photoluminescent in solution and strongly photoluminescent as thin films (lambda(PL)=525-578 nm) with quantum yields of up to 18 % and lifetimes of 1.1-1.7 ns, consistent with the dominant radiative decay through fluorescence. Addition of water to THF solutions of the BODIHYs studied causes molecular aggregation which restricts intramolecular motion and thereby enhances photoluminescence. The observed photoluminescence of BODIHY thin films is likely facilitated by a similar molecular packing effect. Finally, cyclic voltammetry studies confirmed that BODIHY derivatives bearing para-substituted N-aryl groups could be reversibly oxidized (E-ox1=0.62-1.02 V vs. Fc/Fc(+)) to their radical cation forms. Chemical oxidation studies confirmed that para-substituents at the N-aryl groups are required to circumvent radical decomposition pathways. Our findings provide new opportunities and guiding principles for the design of sought-after multifunctional boron difluoride complexes that are photoluminescent in the solid state.

Background: Bis(indolyl)methane derivatives are widely found in nature with a broad range of biological and pharmacological activities. The development of techniques for the synthesis and functionalization of bis(indolyl)methanes have attracted more and more attention in recent years. Objective: To study the synthesis and biological activity of heterocyclic substituted bis(indolyl)methanes. Materials and Methods: A series of heterocyclic substituted bis(indolyl)methanes (3a-3p) have been prepared by condensation reaction of indole and heterocyclic aldehydes catalyzed by boron trifluoride etherate with high yields. Preliminary in vitro anti-inflammatory in lipopolysaccharide (LIPS)-stimulated RAW-264.7 macrophages and cytotoxic activity against human tumor cell lines (A549, Hela and SGC7901) by MTT assay were tested. Results: The result indicated that heterocyclic substituted bis(indolyl)methanes showed good anti-inflammatory and selective cytotoxic activity. Especially, compounds 3o, 3p and 3q displayed similar inhibitory effect on the generation of NO to positive control dexamethasone, and compound 3q displayed similar selective cytotoxic activity to 5-FU. Conclusion: Heterocyclic substituted bis(indolyl)methanes may be used as potential anti-inflammatory and anticancer leads.

Two magnetic nano catalysts of nickel and copper, Fe3O4@SiO2@DOP-BenPyr-M(II), (M=Ni and Cu) have been synthesized. These catalysts were applied as recoverable, efficient and new heterogeneous catalysts for the high yielding and room temperature one-pot procedure of selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides and oxidative coupling of thiols to disulfides. In addition, the catalytic activity of Fe3O4@SiO2@DOP-BenPyr-Ni(II) was investigated as heterogeneous nanocatalyst for synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones, 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles and polyhydroquinolines. Koji amazake, prepared from rice koji, is a traditional Japanese sweet beverage. The main source of sweetness is glucose derived from rice starch following digestion by enzymes of Aspergillus oryzae during saccharification. The temperature of this process was empirically determined as 45 degrees C-60 degrees C, but no studies have systematically investigated the effect of temperature on saccharification efficiency. We addressed this in the present study by evaluating saccharification efficiency at various temperatures. We found that glucose content was the highest at 50 degrees C (100%) and was reduced at temperatures of 40 degrees C (66.4%), 60 degrees C (91.9%), and 70 degrees C (76.6%). We previously reported that 12 types of oligosaccharides are present in koji amazake; the levels of eight of these, namely nigerose, kojibiose, trehalose, isomaltose, gentiobiose, raffinose, panose, and isomaltotriose, were the highest at 50 degrees C-60 degrees C, whereas sophorose production was maximal at 70 degrees C. Based on these findings, we initially performed saccharification at 50 degrees C and then switched the temperature to 70 degrees C. The maximum amount of each saccharide including sophorose that was produced was close to the values obtained at these two temperatures. Thus, oligosaccharide composition of koji amazake is dependent on saccharification temperature. These findings provide useful information for improving the consumer appeal of koji amazake by enhancing oligosaccharide content. (C) 2018, The Society for Biotechnology, Japan. All rights reserved.

Cobalt complexes containing a salen-type pyridoxal ligand with pyridine were synthesized as a new Co (III) catalytic system for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide. Two cobalt(III) complexes possessing a salen-type pyridoxyl ligand were synthesized by the reaction of pyridoxal ligands (pyr(2)en = (N,N’-bis (pyridoxylideneiminato)ethylene) and pyr(2)cy = (N,N’-bis(pyridoxylideneiminato)cyclohexane)) and Co (OAc)(2) and characterized by various analytical methods, including infrared spectroscopy and high-resolution mass analysis. Single-crystal X-ray crystallography analysis confirmed that the cobalt pyr(2)en complex had a distorted octahedral structure: the tetradentate Schiff base ligand binds the cobalt metal in one plane, and the metal center adopts an octahedral geometry by the additional coordination of acetate and dimethyl sulfoxide. The synthesized complexes were used as catalysts in the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide (CO2) to propylene oxide. A naphthalimide-pyridoxal conjugate 1 has been designed and synthesized. Compound 1 forms a stable greenish yellow colored gel in DMSO:H2O (8:1 v/v). Rheological study reveals that the gel is mechanically strong (G> G) over a wide range of applied strains. The morphology of the gel as determined by FESEM shows a highly cross-linked fibrous network. The gel is anion-responsive and is selectively transformed into a sol with a color change from greenish yellow to deep blue only in the presence of F- among other anions. In CH3CN, compound 1 was also sensitive to basic anions such as F- and AcO- ions. In solution, F- was differentiated from AcO- through a color change. While the yellow colored solution of 1 in acetonitrile was changed into deep blue in the presence of F-, AcO- ions gave a faint blue coloration. A similar colorimetric differentiation of F- from AcO- has been possible in CH3CN by a reusable Schiff base-linked Merrifield resin 1a or 1b.

4-Hydroxymethyl-2-hetaryl(hetaroyl)furo[2,3-c]pyridines, the products of furan cyclization of pyridoxal with acylmethyl- and heteroarylmethyl halides, easily react with thionyl chloride in DMF to form new series of 4-chloromethyl-2-heteroaryl[2,3-c]pyridines. Five cobalt complexes synthesized from two aroylhydrazones were characterized by elemental analyses, thermogravimetric analysis, molar conductivity, magnetic susceptibility measurements, IR and electronic spectra. Single crystal X-ray structure of one of the complex is also reported and it got crystallized in triclinic space group P (1) over bar and the crystal structure shows a distorted octahedral geometry around the metal center. Spectral data reveal that both the aroylhydrazones are tridentate and coordinate through the azomethine nitrogen, hydrazonic oxygen, and pyridyl nitrogen. Magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm the paramagnetic nature of the Co(II) complexes and one of the complex was found to be diamagnetic in nature. Additionally, HF/6-311G(d,p)/LANL2DZ calculations were performed to predict the possible intramolecular interactions contributing to the lowering of the stabilization energy. Accordingly, pi -> pi* transitions were found to be responsible for the stabilization energy for the ligands and their cobalt complexes. To describe and discuss the chemical reactivity and stability of synthesized complexes, quantum chemical parameters like frontier orbital energies, hardness, softness, energy gap, electronegativity, chemical potential, electrophilicity, polarizability and dipole moment were calculated. Also, the main electronic structure principles such as maximum hardness, minimum polarizability, and minimum electrophilicity principles were considered to evaluate the stability of the complexes.
