The residue was purified by flash chromatogram with ethyl acetate/petroleum ether (1:3) to afford 5,6-dimethoxynicotinaldehyde (42) as a yellow solid (13.5 g, 81%). ESI-MS, m/z=168 [M+H]+.

The residue was purified by flash silica column chromatography or reverse phase column chromatography to give the product.
