The residue was chromatographed on silica gel eluted with ethyl acetate: hexane (2: 8) to afford the title compound (10.4 g, 60%). MS: (M+H) + = m/z 246.

Yield: >97%, m.p.: 147-1490C.IR (KBr):- 3436, 3078, 3054, 1449, 1414, 1274, 1243, 1150, 1042, 900, 670 cm’1. 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSOd6): d 7.71 (d, IH, J= 6.6 Hz), 8.24 (d, IH, J= 5.1 Hz), 8.75 (s, IH).

The solid was collected by filtration, then washed with 3×800 ml of water and dried in an oven under reduced pressure. This resulted in 122.2 g (84%) of 3-bromo-5- chloro-l-tosyl-lH-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridme as a yellow solid.
