The X-ray crystal structures of the complexes reveal dual denticity of the ligand, bidenticity in the absence of a co-ligand as in complex1, and tridenticity in the presence of a co-ligand such as SCN-/N(CN)(2)(-)as in complexes2and3. The complexes, though binuclear in the solid state, exist as a monomeric unit in solution due to the exceptionally long axial Cu-O-hydroxymethyl(2.4-2.5 angstrom) bond. All three complexes show efficient catalytic activities towards the aerial oxidation of 3,5-ditertiarybutylcatechol (DTBCH2) withk(cat)values of 5.38 x 10(4)h(-1), 1.18 x 10(5)h(-1)and 1.06 x 10(5)h(-1)in methanol. Complexes1and2also act as a selective sulphide ion sensor withK(b)values of 6.6 x 10(3)M(-1)and 8.1 x 10(3)M(-1), respectively, while their respective L.O.D. values are 3.4 mu M and 3.2 mu M.

Titanium ethoxide has been employed as a novel and efficient reagent for the Knoevenagel condensation of aldehydes with active methylenes such as diethyl malonate and ethyl cyanoacetate under solvent free conditions to afford substituted olefins in high to excellent yields. The reaction is suitable for a variety of aromatic, aliphatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes with various active methylenes. Parallel to this, microwave irradiation has been utilized to achieve improved reaction rates and enhanced yields. Herein, we illustrated a convenient method for the preparation of alpha,beta-unsaturated compounds using both conventional and microwave irradiation methods. An efficient and solvent free Knoevenagel condensation between aldehydes and active methylenes was developed using titanium ethoxide. The procedure proved to be successful with a wide range of substrates such as aromatic, aliphatic and heterocyclic aldehydes and various active methylenes to afford substituted olefins. The reaction was also carried out under microwave irradiation to accomplish the corresponding olefins with improved reaction rates, yields and cleaner reaction profiles.We have developed an efficient and novel methodology for the synthesis of olefinic compounds by Knoevenagel condensation under solvent-free conditions using titanium ethoxide, for the first time, as a reagent as well as a solvent. This method is appropriate for the synthesis of a variety of aromatic aldehydes containing various electron-donating and withdrawing groups, aliphatic and heteroaromatic aldehydes. The significant advantages offered by this methodology could be applied to various active methylenes in order to offer the corresponding Knoevenagel products. Thus, we believe that this method delivers high conversions, cleaner reaction profiles under solvent-free reaction conditions and shorter reaction times, all of which make it a very useful and attractive approach for the preparation of a wide range of substituted olefins.

N-Unprotected ketimines are useful substrates and intermediates for synthesizing valuable nitrogen-containing compounds, but their potential applicability is limited by the available synthetic methods. To address this issue, we report a scandium(III) triflate catalyzed direct synthesis of N-unprotected ketimines. Using commercially available reagents and Lewis acid catalysts, ketones were directly transformed into the corresponding N-unprotected ketimines in high yields with broad functional group tolerance, even in multigram scales. The reactions were readily applicable for one-pot synthesis of important compounds such as a glycine Schiff base without isolation of N-unprotected ketimine intermediates. Preliminary mechanistic studies to clarify the reaction mechanism are also described.

Water-soluble vitamins like B3 (nicotinamide), B6 (pyridoxine), and B9 (folic acid) are of utmost importance in human health and disease, as they are involved in numerous critical metabolic reactions. Not surprisingly, deficiencies of these vitamins have been linked to various disease states. Unfortunately, not much is known about the physiological levels of B6 vitamers and vitamin B3 in an ethnically isolated group (such as an Emirati population), as well as their relationship with obesity. The aim of the present study was to quantify various B6 vitamers, as well as B3, in the plasma of obese and healthy Emirati populations and to examine their correlation with obesity. A sensitive and robust HPLC-MS/MS-based method was developed for the simultaneous quantitation of five physiologically relevant forms of vitamin B6, namely pyridoxal, pyridoxine, pyridoxamine, pyridoxamine phosphate, and pyridoxal phosphate, as well as nicotinamide, in human plasma. This method was used to quantify the concentrations of these vitamers in the plasma of 57 healthy and 57 obese Emirati volunteers. Our analysis showed that the plasma concentrations of nicotinamide, pyridoxal, and pyridoxamine phosphate in the obese Emirati population were significantly higher than those in healthy volunteers (p< 0.0001,p= 0.0006, andp= 0.002, respectively). No significant differences were observed for the plasma concentrations of pyridoxine and pyridoxal phosphate. Furthermore, the concentrations of some of these vitamers in healthy Emirati volunteers were significantly different than those published in the literature for Western populations, such as American and European volunteers. This initial study underscores the need to quantify micronutrients in distinct ethnic groups, as well as people suffering from chronic metabolic disorders. A chemical sensor composed of pyridoxal hydrochloride schiff base based on diarylethene (1O) was synthesized. Its photochemical properties and selectivity to ions were further studied. The chemosensor could detect cyanide effectively and is almost undisturbed by other ions. When titrating CN-, the reaction aroused a distinct change in the absorption spectrum with the color change from transparent to yellow, and the fluorescence intensity centered at 562 nm was increased 68 folds. It also exhibited a good fluorescence sensing of Mg(2+ )with high selectivity and sensitivity. Upon addition of Mg2+, its emission intensity enhanced 110 folds, with the color change from dark to bright blue. Its good spectral response could be applied to molecular logic circuit. Moreover, the chemosensor could be made into test paper strips for the qualitative and quantitative detection of CN- and Mg2+.

A new unsymmetrical N2O2-tetradentate Schiff-base complex of zinc(II) was synthesized by the template reaction of pyridoxal-S-methylthiosemicarbazone and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzaldehyde as starting compounds. S-methylthiosemicarbazone (1) and zinc(II) complex [Zn(L)CH3OH] ( 2) were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV-visible, H-1, and C-13 NMR spectra. The molecular structure of the complex (2) was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. The structure consists of a distorted square-pyramidal geometry around the central metal, Zn(II). Quantum chemical calculations were carried out using density functional theory DFT/B3LYP, 6-31G (d), and LanL2DZ basis sets for theoretical characterization of the compounds. The experimental and theoretical data were compared comprehensively. The potential energy distribution (PED) analysis was performed for the assignment of vibration frequencies. In order to support in vitro studies, molecular docking studies have been carried out so that the title compound can be an inhibitor of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (1 m17), and the relationship between calculated HOMO energies and docking studies has been examined. In addition, the total antioxidant capacity (as TEAC value) and free radical scavenging activity of the compounds were determined by Cupric Reducing Antioxidant Capacity (CUPRAC) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) methods, respectively.
