Researchers who often do experiments know that organic synthesis is a process of preparing more complex target molecules from simple raw materials through one or more chemical reactions. To a solution of 5-bromo-2-chloro-3-methylpyridine (300 g, 1.45 mol) in MeOH (3 L) was added freshly prepared sodium methoxide (156 g, 2.9 mol), and the reaction mixture was heated to reflux and stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was quenched with acetic acid (600 mL) and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate (3 L) and washed with water (3 L). The aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate (3 L) and the combined organic layers were washed with brine (3 L), dried over anhydrous MgSCL and evaporated under reduced pressure to provide crude 5-bromo-2-methoxy-3-methylpyridine (220 g, 75%). l NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) d (s, 1 H), 7.47 (s, 1 H), 3.93 (s, 3 H), 2.05 (s, 3 H).
