2-Chloro-5-hydroxypyridine (25 g, l93mmol), potassium carbonate (53.3 g, 386 mmol), and methyl iodide (14.5 mL, 223mmol) were combined in a flask of acetonitrile (500 mL, 0.2M) under nitrogen. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight and then diluted with water (1L). The reaction mixture was extracted with hexanes (3 x 500 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure.
