NMR (300 MHz, CDC13) delta ppm 7.39-7.2 (m, 5H), 5.69-5.63 (m, 1H), 4.03 (s, 2H), 3.58 (s, 2H), 3.0 (m, 2H), 2.6 (t, J= 6 Hz, 2H), 2.21-2.11 (m, 2H).

C. et al. J. Org. Chem. 64, pp. 9430-9443 (1999)), lambdaWlambda^-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) (8.15 mL, 54.0 mmol), and anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (THF) (10 mL). The resultant clear, colorless solution was degassed with several cycles of evacuation under reduced pressure followed by a nitrogen purge, then cooled to -78 0C with a dry ice/acetone bath. A solution of n-butyllithium in hexanes (20.0 mL of a 2.5 M solution, 50.0 mmol) was added via syringe under nitrogen atmosphere over 15 minutes (min), resulting in the formation of a thick tan slurry. After 10 min, the cooling bath was replaced with a 5 0C ice bath, and the slurry was allowed to stir for 2 hours. The slurry was then cooled again to -78 0C, and triisopropylborate (17.5 mL, 76.0 mmol) was added dropwise via syringe over 10 min. The reaction mixture was then warmed to ambient temperature and allowed to stir for 20 min. The reaction mixture initially became clear, and then a white precipitate formed. The resultant slurry was then poured into saturated aqueous ammonium choride (100 mL) and allowed to stir vigorously for an additional 20 min. The white precipitate was isolated by filtration, washed sequentially with water (100 mL) and diethyl ether (100 mL), and then dried overnight under reduced pressure, providing 3.10 g of 4-[(tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino]pyridin-3- ylboronic acid as a white solid.

The aqueous was washed with ethyl acetate and the combined organics were washed with saturated NaHCO3, saturated NaCl, dried over Na2S04, and concentrated in vacuo to a dark residue. The crude material was chromatographed on Si02 eluting with a gradient of ethyl acetate / hexane. The product was recovered as light tan solid, (12 mg, 47%). LCMS ESI (+) m/z (M+H) 420; 1H MR (400 MHz, CDCl3 plus CD3OD): delta 8.66 (s, 1H), 8.60 (s, 1H), 7.79-7.75 (m, 2H), 7.22-7.20 (m, 1H), 5.30 (d, 1H), 3.92-3.90 (m, 1H), 3.46-3.32 (m, 1H), 3.31-3.21 (m, 1H).

General procedure: According to a typical procedure, in a 100 mL round bottom flask, 2 g (13.06 mmol) of the acid 16 were added to 30 mL of acetone. The mixture was alkalized with a 20% NaOH solution to completely dissolve the acid. 0.82 mL (13.1 mmol, 1.87 g) of commercial CH3I were then added and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for about 4 h. The solvent was moved off in a rotary evaporator and the residue was taken up in a small volume of distilled water (30 mL), acidified with 2 M HCl and stirred with slight heating for about 30 min. After concentration of the solution to about a half volume in a rotary evaporator, the formed solid product was collected by filtration, and a white residue was obtained. To remove the NaCl present as an impurity, the residue was treated with a small volume of absolute ethanol (15 mL), the suspension was filtered, and to the filtrate was added an excess of diethyl ether, obtaining the precipitation of the desired compound. This was collected and dried under vacuum.
