BACKGROUND There is a close relationship between certain ‘aging markers’ in wine and the wine’s age. This study aimed to characterize all extracted aging markers in Chinese rice wine and distinguish the ages of Chinese rice wine using principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA). RESULTS A total of 49 potential aging markers (P <= 0.05*) were extracted from 71 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Chinese rice wine across a range of seven different ages. Of all 49 extracted aging markers, all furans, 2/3 aldehydes and ketones maintained significantly increasing levels with age (P <= 0.01**), especially sotolon (0.981**) and acetophenone (0.951**). On the other hand, all sulfides decreased significantly (P <= 0.01**). Changes in vanillin, guaiacol, 4-vinylguaiacol (4-VG) and 4-ethylguaiacol (4-EG) also suggested a potential synthesis during the aging process. The results of PCA and CA demonstrated that Chinese rice wines with different ages could be clearly distinguished from each other, which was consistent with the evolution of the 49 aging markers during the aging process. CONCLUSION These 49 potential 'aging markers' successfully distinguished ages using PCA and CA. Our results therefore throw light on the characterization of VOCs during Chinese rice wine aging, and provide a quantitative basis for discriminating the ages of Chinese rice wine. The carbonylative Suzuki cross-coupling of 2-bromopyridine with various boronic acids to prepare unsymmetrical arylpyridine ketones has been carried out using palladium/N-heterocyclic carbene complexes as catalysts prepared in situ. The selectivity and the rate of these reactions are highly dependent on the conditions, i.e., nature of the palladium catalyst precursor, solvent, temperature and CO pressure. The main side-products arise from direct, non-carbonylative cross-coupling. Under the optimum conditions, arylpyridine ketones are recovered in high yields (60-88%). The antibacterial activities of the corresponding benzimidazole salts 2 were tested against Gram positive and negative bacteria using the agar dilution procedure, and their IC50 values have been determined.

Transition-metal-catalysed, redox-neutral dehydrosilylation of alkenes is a long-standing challenge in organic synthesis, with current methods suffering from low selectivity and narrow scope. In this study, we report a general and simple method for the manganese-catalysed dehydrosilylation and hydrosilylation of alkenes, with Mn-2(CO)(10) as a catalyst precursor, by using a ligand-tuned metalloradical reactivity strategy. This enables versatility and controllable selectivity with a 1:1 ratio of alkenes and silanes, and the synthetic robustness and practicality of this method are demonstrated using complex alkenes and light olefins. The selectivity of the reaction has been studied using density functional theory calculations, showing the use of an (PrPNP)-Pr-i ligand to favour dehydrosilylation, while a JackiePhos ligand favours hydrosilylation. The reaction is redox-neutral and atom-economical, exhibits a broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance, and is suitable for various synthetic applications on a gram scale.

Pyrido[1,2-a]indoles are known for medicinally and pharmaceutically important compounds; however, the efficient synthetic routes are scarce in the literature. We report herein a convenient and efficient route to synthesize these molecules through indium-catalyzed transannulation of pyridotriazoles with arenes. A library of compounds have been synthesized employing the method developed with various substituted pyrido[1,2-a]indole derivatives in moderate to good yields. The density functional theory study using SMDDCB-M06/6-31++G(d,p)/LANL2DZ//B3LYP/6-31G(d)/LANL2DZ method suggests that the reactions proceed via indium-carbenoid complex.

behavior of cucurbituril-bipyridinium pseudorotaxane ligand by utilizing meta-functionalized bipyridinium dicarboxylate guest. A tailored pseudorotaxane precursor involving 1,1′-(hexane-1,6-diyl)bis(3-cyanopyridin-1-ium) bromide (C6BPCN3) and cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) has designed and synthesized. Through in situ hydrolysis of the pseudorotaxane ligands and their coordination assembly with uranyl cations, seven new uranyl-rotaxane coordination polymers URCP1-URCP7 have been obtained under hydrothermal conditions in the presence of different anions. It is demonstrated that the variation of carboxylate groups from para- to meta-position greatly affected the coordination behaviors of the metafunctionalized pseudorotaxane linkers, which are enriched from simple guest-only binding to host-guest simultaneous coordination and synergistic chelating. This effective regulation on uranyl coordination of supramolecular pseudorotaxane can be attributed to the proximity effect, which refers to the meta-position carboxyl group being spatially closer to the portal carbonyl group of CB[6]. Moreover, by combining other regulation methods such as introducing competing counterions and modulating solution acidity, the nuclearity of the uranyl center and the coordination patterns of the pseudorotaxane ligand can be diversely tuned, which subsequently exert great influence on the final dimensionality of resultant uranyl compounds. This work presents a large diversity of uranyl-based coordination polyrotaxane compounds with fascinating mechanically interlocked components and, most importantly, provides a feasible approach to adjust and control the metal coordination behavior of the pseudorotaxane ligand that might expand the scope of application of such supramolecular ligands.

We herein report the fabrication of a bifunctional iron nanocomposite catalyst, in which two catalytically active sites of Fe-N-x and Fe phosphate, as oxidation and Lewis acid sites, were simultaneously integrated into a hierarchical N,P-dual doped porous carbon. As a bifunctional catalyst, it exhibited high efficiency for direct oxidative cleavage of alkenes into ketones or their oxidation into 1,2-diketones with a broad substrate scope and high functional group tolerance using TBHP as the oxidant in water under mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, it could be easily recovered for successive recycling without appreciable loss of activity. Mechanistic studies disclose that the direct oxidation of alkenes proceeds via the formation of an epoxide as intermediate followed by either acid-catalyzed Meinwald rearrangement to give ketones with one carbon shorter or nucleophilic ring-opening to generate 1,2-diketones in a cascade manner. This study not only opens up a fancy pathway in the rational design of Fe-N-C catalysts but also offers a simple and efficient method for accessing industrially important ketones and 1,2-diketones from alkenes in a cost-effective and environmentally benign fashion.

A new methodology for the highly efficient and atom-economic oxidation of alcohols and benzylic compounds to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones with environmental-friendly hydrogen peroxide using a magnetic MOF nanocatalyst has been developed. We demonstrated that the resulting magnetic nanocomposite CoFe2O4@SiO2@MIL-53(Fe) can show excellent catalytic performances in the highly selective oxidation at room temperature, based on a synergetic effect between iron sites and CoFe2O4@SiO2. The nanocatalyst offers simple operation for recovery and the recycling test showed that it could be reused for successive runs without significant degradation in catalytic activity.

One of the novelties of this work is that the Rotimer secretion and consequently, the RIC-formation is a mutually obligatory and evolutionary calcium-dependent process in the concerned monogonants. This in vivo procedure needs calcium, both for the physiology of animals and for fiber formation, particularly in the latter case. The conglomerate covered area (%) and the detection of the longest filament (mm) of the given RIC were the generally and simultaneously applied methods in the current modulating experiments. Exploring the regulatory (e.g. calciumdependency) and stimulating (e.g. Lucidril effect) possibilities of biopolymer secretion are the basis for optimizing the RIC-production capacities of these micro-metazoans.

Hydrogen polysulfides (H2Sn, n > 1) belong to sulfane sulfur in the reactive sulfur species (RSS) family and play significant roles in maintaining biological homeostasis in organisms. The detection of H2Sn in living systems is essential, but further understanding of its intact function in living cells has been limited, owing to the lack of appropriate analytical tools. In this work, a new fluorescent probe PP-PS was designed for the detection of endogenous H2Sn. The probe has a large Stokes shift (178 nm), low detection limit (1 nM), and short response time (1 minute). Besides, PP-PS was successfully applied in the imaging of endogenous H2Sn in lysosomes of living cancer cells, xenograft mouse tumor tissues, and LPS-induced mouse inflammation tissues. These results revealed that the probe PP-PS could act as a new fluorescence imaging tool to study the function of intracellular hydropolysulfides.
