We describe here the synthesis and structural characterization of two new classes of ambiphilic, N-boryl imine ligands, wherein boron is associated with a Lewis basic imine nitrogen. These ligands can be easily generated in two steps from the corresponding pyridinyl- and phosphinyl-tethered aldehydes. B-11 NMR analysis suggests the association of the Lewis acidic boron to either the pyridine unit or via intermolecular acid/base interactions with the imine. Both of these ligands can coordinate to palladium, and their structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

A new fluorometric chemodosimeter 2-amino-3-(((E)-3-(1-phenylimidazo[1,5-]pyridin-3-yl)benzylidene)amino)maleonitrile (BPI-MAL) has been designed and synthesized for sensing hypochlorite. BPI-MAL showed a selective turn-on fluorescence for ClO- through hypochlorite-promoted de-diaminomaleonitrile reaction. It also could detect ClO- in the presence of various competitive anions including reactive oxygen species. Interestingly, sensor BPI-MAL was successfully applied as a fluorescent test kit for ClO- determination. The sensing property and mechanism of BPI-MAL toward ClO- were studied by fluorescence and UV-vis spectroscopy, NMR titration and DFT calculations.

Two diastereoisomers of bis(2-benzoylpyridine-O,N)dichloridonickel(II) have been isolated from the reactions of nickel(II) chloride hexahydrate and the organic ligand depending on the reaction solvent (ethanol, acetonitrile) used. DFT studies indicate that one of the isomers is more stable in both solvents, but nevertheless different diastereoisomers are crystallized from the two solvents. The two complexes represent the first pair of well characterized diastereoisomers in the coordination chemistry of 2-pyridyl ketones, providing a new example in the chemistry of octahedral MA(2)(BC) over cap (2) complexes (A = a monodentate ligand, (BC) over cap = an unsymmetrical bidentate chelate).

Ruthenium complexes(1-3) have been synthesized using pincer-type ligands L-1 = (E)-2-((2-phenyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)hydrazono)methyl)pyridine, L-2 = (E)-2-(1-phenyl-2-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinyl)pyridine, L-3 = (E)-2-(phenyl(2-phenyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)hydrazono) methyl)pyridine. The molecular structures of all the complexes 1, 2 and 3 were determined by using single crystal X-ray diffraction. These complexes showed excellent catalytic activities such as transfer hydrogenation and alcohol oxidation. Theoretical calculations have been performed to understand the electronic properties of all the complexes using B3LYP as a function and LANL2DZ as a basis set.

Two neutral pentacoordinate mononuclear cadmium(II) complexes of the type [Cd(L)X-2] [L = N-(pyridin-2′-yl)benzylidene)-2-(piperidin-1-yl)ethane-1,2-diamine; X = Cl, (1) and X = Br, (2)], one neutral hexacoordinate dinuclear compound [Cd(L)(mu-NCS)NCS](2) (3) and one neutral hexacoordinate coordination polymer [Cd(L)(mu-N-3)N-3](n) (4) have been prepared and characterized using microanalytical, spectroscopic, thermal and X-ray crystallographic results. Structural analyses show that each cadmium(II) center in the isostructural compounds 1 and 2 adopts a distorted square pyramidal geometry with a CdN3X2 [X = Cl in 1 and X = Br in 2] chromophore through coordination of three N atoms of L and two terminal halides. In 3 and 4, each metal(II) center affords a distorted octahedral geometry with MN5S (in 3) and MN6 (in 4) chromophores. Each metal(II) center in dinuclear compound 3 is attached to three N-atoms of L, one N-atom of terminal thiocyanate, and one N-atom and one S-atom of two mu(1,3)-bridging thiocyanate units, whereas three N-atoms of L and three N-atoms of one terminal and two mu(1,3)-bridging azide units are bound to each metal(II) center in the coordination polymer 4. Each metal (II) center in 4 is connected to two other metal(II) centers through two different mu(1,3)-azide bridges affording a zigzag one-dimensional (1D) chain. In the crystalline state, mononuclear units in both 1 and 2 are stabilized through intermolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot X (X = Cl in 1 and X = Br in 2) hydrogen bonds promoting to 2D sheet structures. The dinuclear units in 3 pack through cooperative intermolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot S and C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds giving rise to a 3D network structure. 1D chains in 4 are stabilized through cooperative intermolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds promoting to a 2D sheet structure. These 2D sheets, in turn, self-assemble through weak noncovalent pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions to afford a 3D network structure. The thermally stable compounds (1-4) exhibit intraligand (1)(pi-pi*) fluorescence in DMF solutions at room temperature with lifetimes in range 0.83-2.94 ns.

A three-descriptor quantitative structure-activity/toxicity relationship (QSAR/QSTR) model was developed for the skin permeability of a sufficiently large data set consisting of 274 compounds, by applying support vector machine (SVM) together with genetic algorithm. The optimal SVM model possesses the coefficient of determination R-2 of 0.946 and root mean square (rms) error of 0.253 for the training set of 139 compounds; and a R-2 of 0.872 and rms of 0.302 for the test set of 135 compounds. Compared with other models reported in the literature, our SVM model shows better statistical performance in a model that deals with more samples in the test set. Therefore, applying a SVM algorithm to develop a nonlinear QSAR model for skin permeability was achieved.

Palladium nanoparticles (NPs) are decorated on the surface of an amine-functionalized graphene oxide (Pd@APGO) and characterized by using various analytical techniques. In this methodology, the surface of graphene oxide is modified using the amine functional groups which help stabilization and distribution of Pd NPs very well and increases the surface electron density of NPs by electron donating from amine groups. This developed catalyst shows a high catalytic activity toward the Suzuki coupling and carbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions at mild reaction conditions. The amine on the graphene oxide plays a very crucial role to stabilize and increase the electron density of Pd NPs and prevents the leaching of Pd metals. The Pd@APGO catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity (>90%) with a large range of substrates for both of the reactions and provides five recycle runs without the loss of its activity.

Aim: To study a new series of [1,2,3] triazolo[1,5-alpha] pyridine derivatives as trypanocidal agents because current antichagasic pharmacologic therapy is only partially effective. Materials & methods: The effect of the series upon Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes and murine macrophages viability, cell cycle, cell death and on the metabolites of the sterol biosynthesis pathway was measured; also, docking in 14 alpha-demethylase was analyzed. Results: Compound 16 inhibits 14 alpha-demethylase producing an imbalance in the cholesterol/ergosterol synthesis pathway, as suggested by a metabolic control and theoretical docking analysis. Consequently, it prevented cell proliferation, stopping the cellular cycle at the G2/M phase, inducing cell death. Conclusion: Although the exact cell death mechanism remained elusive, this series can be used for the further rational design of novel antiparasitic molecules.

Hydrogenation of over a dozen aromatic compounds, including both heteroarenes and arenes, over palladium on carbon (Pd/C, 1-100 mol%) with H-2-balloon pressure at room temperature is reported. Analyses using pyridine as a model substrate revealed that acetic acid was the best solvent, as using only 1 mol% Pd/C provided piperidine quantitatively. Substrate scope analysis and density functional theory calculations indicated that reaction rates are highly dependent on frontier molecular orbital characteristics and the steric bulkiness of substituents. Moreover, the established method was used for the concise synthesis of the anti-Alzheimer drug donepezil (Aricept (R)).
