Herein, we realized the simultaneous online detection of six tobacco alkaloids (TM) by in-tube solid-phase microextraction (In-tube SPME) coupled with mass spectrometry by a rapid, sensitive, and matrix effect-free method requiring no chromatographic separation and only minimal sample pre-treatment. A poly (N-isopropylacrylamide-co-divinylbenzene-co-N, N’-methylenediacrylamide) [Poly (NIPAAm-co-DVB-co-MBAA)] monolithic column was designed according to the chemical structures of selected TM and used as an extraction medium engaging in hydrophobic, pi-pi, and hydrogen bonding interactions with analytes, allowing them to be effectively extracted. A number of important parameters were systematically optimized to achieve maximal extraction efficiency. The ion intensity of the TM signals obtained by in-tube SPME-MS were higher than the direct MS mode by about 400 folds with the signal-to-noise ratio improved by 2-7 folds. The detection limits of the six TM were determined as 1.99-4.06 ng g(-1), with good linearity with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.99 obtained under optimal extraction conditions. Besides, TA recoveries in cigarette tobacco spiked at three concentration levels were in the range of 76.4-100.2%, and the corresponding RSDs (n = 5) were obtained as 4.32-7.16%. The extraction performance of the poly (NIPAAm-co-DVB-co-MBAA) monolithic column was well reproducible, with intra- or inter-day precision RSDs determined not to exceed 7.38%. Finally, no marked matrix effects were observed when the developed method was applied to the analysis of both high-abundance and trace level TM in practical samples, and the above technique was therefore concluded to be well suited for the detection of TAs in cigarette tobacco or other products.

We describe here the synthesis and structural characterization of two new classes of ambiphilic, N-boryl imine ligands, wherein boron is associated with a Lewis basic imine nitrogen. These ligands can be easily generated in two steps from the corresponding pyridinyl- and phosphinyl-tethered aldehydes. B-11 NMR analysis suggests the association of the Lewis acidic boron to either the pyridine unit or via intermolecular acid/base interactions with the imine. Both of these ligands can coordinate to palladium, and their structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallography.

By taking advantage of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process, we presented a novel fluorescent probe IPY-SO2 based on imidazo[1,5-alpha]pyridine derivative for detecting SO32- with a low detection limit (70 nM). Combining its favorable turn-on fluorescence feature (75-fold), rapid response (5 min), high selectivity, large Stokes shift (174 nm) and low cytotoxicity, IPY-SO2 was successfully applied to imaging SO32 in living MCF-7 cells and zebrafish. Direct alkylation and arylation of allylic C(sp3)-H bonds are straight-forward approaches for accessing allylic C-C products. However, the engagement of allylic C-C bond- forming reaction without introducing extraneous functional groups and stoichiometric oxidant or reductant has proved difficult. Here, we report a general and mild strategy using semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) as photocatalysts for coupling a broad range of available allylic C(sp(3))-H bonds with alpha- amino C-H bonds or heteroarenes, respectively, under sunlight irradiation (> 85 examples). The protocol bypasses stoichiometric oxidant or reductant and pre-functionalization of both the coupling partners and produces hydrogen (H-2) as the byproduct. The outstanding efficiency and selectivity and step- and atom-economy represents the first direct alkylation and arylation of allylic C(sp(3))-H bonds with hydrogen evolution powered by solar energy.

Chiral heterocyclic secondary alcohols have received much attention due to their widespread use in pharmaceutical intermediates. In this study, Lactobacillus kefiri P2 biocatalysts isolated from traditional dairy products, were used to catalyze the asymmetric reduction of prochiral ketones to chiral secondary alcohols. Secondary chiral carbinols were obtained by asymmetric bioreduction of different prochiral substrates with results up to>99% enantiomeric excess (ee). (R)-1-(benzofuran-2-yl)ethanol 5a, which can be used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals such as bufuralols potent nonselective beta-blockers antagonists, Amiodarone (cardiac anti-arrhythmic), and Benziodarone (coronary vasodilator), was produced in gram-scale, high yield and enantiomerically pure form using L. kefiri P2 biocatalysts. The gram-scale production was carried out, and 9.70 g of (R)-5a in enantiomerically pure form was obtained in 96% yield. Also, production of (R)-5a in terms of yield and gram scale through catalytic asymmetric reduction using the biocatalyst was the highest report so far. This is a cost-effective, clean and eco-friendly process for the preparation of chiral secondary alcohols compared to chemical processes. From an environmental and economic perspective, this biocatalytic method has great application potential, making it a green and sustainable way of synthesis.

For the first time, square planar Pd(II) complexes of hydrazone ligands have been investigated as the emissive components of light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). The neutral transition metal complex, [Pd(L-1)(2)]center dot 2CH(3)OH (1), (HL1 = (E)-N’-(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl) methylene)isonicotinhydrazide), was prepared and structurally characterized. Complex 1 displays quasireversible redox properties and is emissive at room temperature in solution with a lambda(max) of 590 nm. As a result, it was subsequently employed as the emissive material of a single-layer LEC with configuration FTO/1/Ga/In, where studies reveal that it has a yellow color with CIE(x, y) = (0.33, 0.55), a luminance of 134 cd cm(-2), and a turn-on voltage of 3.5 V. Protonation of the pendant pyridine nitrogen atoms of L-1 afforded a second ionic complex [Pd((LH)-H-1)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2) which is also emissive at room temperature with a lambda(max) of 611 nm, resulting in an orange LEC with CIE(x, y) = (0.43, 0.53). The presence of mobile anions and cations in the second inorganic transition metal complex resulted in more efficient charge injection and transport which significantly improved the luminance and turn-on voltage of the device to 188.6 cd cm(-2) and 3 V, respectively. This study establishes Pd(II) hydrazone complexes as a new class of materials whose emissive properties can be chemically tuned and provides proof-of-concept for their use in LECs, opening up exciting new avenues for potential applications in the field of solid state lighting.
