A novel oxidation of benzylic C H bonds for the synthesis of diverse six-membered N-heteroaromatic aldehydes and ketones has been developed. The obvious advantages of this approach are the simple operation, mild reaction conditions, and without use of toxic reagent and transition metal. The present method should provide a useful access for the synthesis and modification of N-heterocycles.

For the first time, square planar Pd(II) complexes of hydrazone ligands have been investigated as the emissive components of light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). The neutral transition metal complex, [Pd(L-1)(2)]center dot 2CH(3)OH (1), (HL1 = (E)-N’-(phenyl(pyridin-2-yl) methylene)isonicotinhydrazide), was prepared and structurally characterized. Complex 1 displays quasireversible redox properties and is emissive at room temperature in solution with a lambda(max) of 590 nm. As a result, it was subsequently employed as the emissive material of a single-layer LEC with configuration FTO/1/Ga/In, where studies reveal that it has a yellow color with CIE(x, y) = (0.33, 0.55), a luminance of 134 cd cm(-2), and a turn-on voltage of 3.5 V. Protonation of the pendant pyridine nitrogen atoms of L-1 afforded a second ionic complex [Pd((LH)-H-1)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2) which is also emissive at room temperature with a lambda(max) of 611 nm, resulting in an orange LEC with CIE(x, y) = (0.43, 0.53). The presence of mobile anions and cations in the second inorganic transition metal complex resulted in more efficient charge injection and transport which significantly improved the luminance and turn-on voltage of the device to 188.6 cd cm(-2) and 3 V, respectively. This study establishes Pd(II) hydrazone complexes as a new class of materials whose emissive properties can be chemically tuned and provides proof-of-concept for their use in LECs, opening up exciting new avenues for potential applications in the field of solid state lighting.

A three-descriptor quantitative structure-activity/toxicity relationship (QSAR/QSTR) model was developed for the skin permeability of a sufficiently large data set consisting of 274 compounds, by applying support vector machine (SVM) together with genetic algorithm. The optimal SVM model possesses the coefficient of determination R-2 of 0.946 and root mean square (rms) error of 0.253 for the training set of 139 compounds; and a R-2 of 0.872 and rms of 0.302 for the test set of 135 compounds. Compared with other models reported in the literature, our SVM model shows better statistical performance in a model that deals with more samples in the test set. Therefore, applying a SVM algorithm to develop a nonlinear QSAR model for skin permeability was achieved.

A rhodium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction via C(O)-C bond activation to form 2-benzoylpyridine N-oxide derivatives is reported. Both the C(O)-C(sp(2)) and C(O)-C(sp(3)) bond could be activated during the reaction with yields up to 92%. The N-oxide moiety could be employed as a traceless directing group, leading to free pyridine ketones.

The site-specific incorporation of deuterium (D) into small molecules is frequently used to access isotopically labeled compounds with broad utility in many research areas, such as drug development, mechanistic studies, and NMR analyses. Nevertheless, the deuteration of a stereocenter in an enantioselective manner, which could slow the metabolism and improve the bioavailability of bioactive molecules, remains challenging owing to the lack of established catalytic methods. Here, we report an asymmetric alpha-deuteration strategy for azaarenes with inexpensive D2O as the deuterium source. A cooperative visible light-driven photoredox and chiral Bronsted acid-catalyzed system using a Hantzsch ester as the terminal reductant has been developed, which enables racemic alpha-chloro-azaarenes and prochiral azaarene-substituted ketones to experience a single-electron reduction-enantioselective deuteration process. The transition metal-free method provides important chiral alpha-deuterated azaarenes in satisfactory yields with good to excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee) and substantial deuterium incorporation.

An iron-sulfur complex formed by the simple mixture of FeCl3 with S-3(center dot-) generated in situ from K2S is developed and applied to selective aerobic oxidation of terminal alkenes. POM-supported metal carbonyl derivatives (PMCDs) represent a family of tremendous potential catalysts owing to their peculiar physical and chemical properties. Yet low-valence transition metal-substituted Dawson-type PMCD catalysts are uncommon. Hence, we synthesized a tricobalt-substituted PMCDs by conventional aqueous solution method, [Na(H2O)(5)](NH4)(7)[P2W15O56Co3(H2O)(3)(OH)(3)Re(CO)(3)]center dot 13H(2)O (1), and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction crystallography, IR, and thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), etc. The obtained compound 1 was employed as a catalyst for the oxidation of diphenylmethane (DPM) to benzophenone, giving 96.8% yield in the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) and pyridine. The control experiments indicate that Co metal ion plays an important role in the catalytic reactions. As a side note, the electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and UV spectroscopy showed that 1 can retain its integrity in solution, and magnetic measurements indicated that 1 exhibited a weaker ferromagnetic interaction at low temperature.

An efficient acid-catalyzed condensation between substituted benzohydrazides and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthalic acid to form 1,4-bis(5-aryl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzenes is reported. Three asymmetric tridentate acyl hydrazone Schiff base ligands namely L1, L2 and L3 were prepared via condensation of 4-methoxybenzohydrazide with picolinaldehyde, 1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethanone and phenyl(pyridin-2-yl)methanone respectively. Three bio-relevant mononuclear zinc(ii) complexes [Zn(L1)Cl-2]2H(2)O (1), [Zn(L2)Cl-2] (2) and [Zn(L3)Cl-2] (3) were synthesized by treatment of zinc(ii) chloride with the corresponding Schiff base ligands and characterised by the usual physicochemical techniques. The solid state structures of complexes 1 and 3 were evaluated by single crystal X-ray analysis. All complexes were able to hydrolyse the P-O bond of the phosphate monoester in 90% (v/v) DMSO-water medium using 4-nitrophenylphosphate (4-NPP) as the model substrate and the trend in their activity is 1 approximate to 2 > 3. On considering the highly efficient hydrolysis properties, complexes 1-3 were tested as potential therapeutic agents for cancer using HCT116 (human colorectal carcinoma), HepG2 (human hepatocellular carcinoma) and A549 (human non-small lung carcinoma) cells. Complex 2 showed the highest IC50 values for anti-cancer activity towards all three cell lines among the three complexes and complex 3 showed the least activity as observed in the phosphatase activity study. The internucleosomal degradation of DNA during apoptosis can be detected by cell death detection ELISA. DNA fragmentation that leads to cell death was examined and when induced by complex 2 in HepG2 cells a significant level of DNA fragmentation was observed at regular intervals of time.

A novel pH-activatable fluorescent probe, 1-(propan-2-yl)-9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole-3-carboxylic acid (L-1), based on beta-carboline derivatives, has been developed, which displays significant fluorescent response toward pH variation with high selectivity, good photo-stability and favorable pKa value.
